পুলিশ জানায়, শনিবার রাতে নগরীর বাদুরতলা এলাকার ফয়জুন্নেসা স্কুলের সামনের ডাস্টবিনে এক বৃদ্ধ লোকের চিৎকার শুনে পথচারীরা জরুরি সেবা ৯৯৯ কল করেন। খবর পেয়ে কোতোয়ালি মডেল থানার এসআই শাওন দাস এবং এএসআই খন্দকার শাহাব উদ্দিন ঘটনাস্থলে যান। পুলিশ দেখেই বৃদ্ধ খোরশেদ মিয়া তাকে বাঁচানোর আকুতি জানান। প্রচণ্ড শ্বাসকষ্টে ভুগছিলেন তিনি।
ওই বৃদ্ধ জানান, তার বাড়ি লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলায়। করোনায় আক্রান্ত বলে নিজ সন্তানরাই তাকে ডাস্টবিনে ফেলে চলে গেছেন।
এ সময় পুলিশ বৃদ্ধকে উদ্ধার করে কুমিল্লা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যায়। সেখানে কয়েক ঘণ্টা পরই তার মৃত্যু হয়।
কুমিল্লা কোতোয়ালি মডেল থানার ওসি মো. আনোয়ারুল হক জানান, বৃদ্ধ খোরশেদ মিয়া অস্পষ্ট স্বরে জানালেন তার বাড়ি লক্ষ্মীপুর এলাকায়। তবে আমরা তার সঠিক ঠিকানা খুঁজে পাইনি। তাই আঞ্জুমানে মফিদুল ইসলামের মাধ্যমে লাশটি দাফনের প্রক্রিয়া চলছে।
